Second trip to Homer

This past weekend we went to Homer, our second (and last) time this summer. Homer is one of my favorite places in Alaska. We will miss it!

After a four hour drive...

The Big Waste

Tonight, the FoodNetwork aired a new show called 'The Big Waste' and... wow. Chefs had to make a full meal for 100 guests using only food that deemed 'unsellable' or undesirable. Basically, food with minor blemishes and cuts of meat that don't sell within the day. This food, from supermarkets to bakeries, is thrown out. In the trash.

I was so shocked to see what markets couldn't sell. Tomato with cracked skin? No one wants that. Bones from fish and cows? People don't realize that's what stock is made from, so in the trash can it goes.

It's sickening. I think of all the food banks and homeless shelters that would GLADLY accept this kind of food. Why isn't it being donated? Is it even being offered to them? So many people go hungry everyday; I just can't understand why BILLIONS of pounds of food is being thrown out that is perfectly edible.
